My Graphic Design Progress

My primary role in my team was as a graphic designer, drawing design ideas for the the Last Agronaut assets, such as the barn, Penelope, sheep and alien plants.

Barn Design Idea

This is some concept art I have created while trying to visualize the environment of our game.
I imagined the barn more futuristically as the game is set in space. I was inspired by a mix of two things :

American barns and a netflix series called Love, Death & Robots ; specifically episode 4 titled Suits.

How the barn could look in different lighting can affect the mood of the scene greatly.

This is how imagine the barn to look in normal daylight.

And the imagined night time scene.

Alien Virus Idea

Here is the alien virus infection that affects the plants.

I have played around with effects and imagined the source of the infection to look like this.
The idea behind it is that it looks like an evil soul, surrounded by thorns.

I started off with a blue hue but realized that those colours are too "friendly" or "inviting".
The greens and reds looked more "threatening", as if to stay away instead.

Here are the variations.

Spaceship Design Idea

During this stage of developing our game, we were really enthusiastic on adding an escape at the end of the game ;
A spaceship for Penelope so that it fit with the narrative behind the Last Agronaut.
When things will go awry for her, she is supposed to get on her ship together with any remaining sheep and GPS and fly off to find a new home.

These are different designs for Penelope's Ship I've created.

They are all named after insects that can fly. I thought it would be an unique idea.

Alien Plants Designs

These are the two main plants that are controlled by the alien virus.
They are enemies you need to fight in the game and are based off real life plants.

This is stapelia villetiae, a type of succulent that inspired the design of the large plant.

As you can see this flower has some appendages near its centre that resemble fangs
Due to that, I was inspired to create the plant monster having a mouth at its centre where it
could sway and bite any creatures approaching nearby.

These are venus flytraps, the inspiration for the smaller plant.

sketchflower2.png

As you can see the head of the flower itself looks like a big mouth with teeth.
I was inspired to create a design by turning the venus flytrap into a flower monster.
The idea behind this alien plant was that it would try to draw prey in using its scent and glowing
stamens.

Penelope & Sheep Design

This is some concept art of Penelope, the main character of our game.

I started first by sketching an idea of a space girl.
I was heavily inspired by the nuka cola girl from Fallout and SEGA's Ulala from Space Channel 5

These are some random sheep variations I came up with, inspired by cartoons and pokemon. The final version of the sheep model was
inspired by the green and pink design on the bottom.

The main pokemon that inspired these designs are Dubwool and Mareep

Initial UI & Menu Idea

This is a peek into what the title screen of The Last Agronaut could look like.

ui_1.png

I started off in CLIP STUDIO Paint and using my Wacom tablet I created a hexagonal shape.

ui_2.PNG

I then added a pattern to this shape by overlaying a gradient. I kept any colours I used in the top left corner as reference.

ui_3.PNG

I then drew a space layer as the background using a space brush and drew the game title carefully onto another layer. I also duplicated the hexagons 3 more times.

ui_4.PNG

I then added some glitchy effects to the title and created a layer for the text so that I could get a feel of what it could look like.

Finally I added the rest of the text, added the shadows and also added two small icons for volume or help to make it seem like a real demo. As a last thing, to make it seem more dynamic, I added an asteroid belt around the each side and a shooting asteroid in the background.
