Ethan Reilly - Big F Games

(D00232531)

Our 4th Year game project is set in a collapsing mineshaft. The player needs to collect components to rebuild the elevator and escape the mineshaft before they run out of air. While we originally planned for the mine to be haunted, we came to the conclusion that the game would be more interesting if the character was hallucinating due to lack of air.

Roles:

Lead Modeler: As modeler, I am responsible for modelling the props(including any pickups, decorative prop pieces, and the parts making up the map) and characters (any npcs as well as the hallucinations that follow the player around).

Co-programming: As co-programmer, I will be coding along with the lead programmer. I will help out whenever needed, and while programming won't be my main focus I will attempt any problems that I am assigned.

Technical Challenges:

The main technical challenge I think I will encounter is modelling the cave/level. I will need to break the cave up into pieces so that collision can be properly added, and I will have to check the entire model to ensure there is no tears or overlaps in the model.

Relevance to Game Concept:

As modeler, it's my job to create the claustrophobic atmosphere through visuals. I need to make the cave tunnels look dark and enclosed to put pressure on the player and compel them to escape.

Support Material:

Below is a list of some of the software I used as part of my work on the collaborative project:

Blender:

Blender is an open-source 3d computer graphics software tool. I used Blender to model all of the props, as well as the various tunnel pieces.

Make-human

Make human is another open-source 3d computer graphics software tool, however it is specifically used to model humans/humanoids.

Krita

Krita is an open-source graphics editor for digital animation. I used it to edit and create textures.

Game Showcase

To the right you'll see a video showcasing how my models looked in game. From user feedback I learned that my models gave players feelings of claustrophobia and set the tone and mood that I was looking for. As well as the tunnels I modeled various props to further set the scene of being in a mine.

Mood Board

I also developed a mood board to convey the mood I wanted the game to produce.
